Advanced technology drives new Avensis
The new Avensis is available in three sleek bodystyles; a sedan, liftback or estate wagon and is built for the European market at Toyota's Burnaston factory, near Derby, England.
Advanced engine technology The new Toyota Avensis is available with a choice of 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0-litre petrol engines and a 2.0-litre direct injection, common rail diesel engine. All petrol engined models in the new Avensis range now benefit from Toyota's advanced Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) technology. As a result the new Avensis is more flexible and easier to drive; offers better performance than comparable cars with the same engine size; uses less fuel and emits less carbon dioxide, less nitrous oxides and less hydrocarbons. The brand new 2.0-litre petrol engine is a Toyota D-4 direct injection petrol unit which offers outstanding fuel economy and performance. The 110 kW engine gives 17.0 per cent more power and 12.4 per cent more torque than the previous 2.0-litre engine and yet is over 7 per cent more economical on the European combined cycle. The new Avensis 2.0 D-4 will accelerate to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds and has a top speed of 210 km/h. The new engine meets European Step 3 emission standards. Step 4 emissions achieved The 1.8-litre VVT-i engine in the new Avensis range is the latest version of the unit already fitted to successful new Toyota sports models, such as the Celica and the MR2 Roadster. It already complies with Step 4 emissions legislation which will not be introduced until 2005. Power has been raised by 17.2 per cent over the Avensis engine it replaces and the new engine develops 95 kW at 6,000 rpm. Maximum torque is up 9.7 per cent to 170Nm at 4,200 rpm. The new Avensis 1.8 VVT-i accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.0 seconds and has a top speed of 200km/h. Class leading The new 1.6-litre VVT-i Avensis outperforms some 1.8-litre rivals in the class yet still offers better fuel economy. The 1598cc engine delivers 81kW at 6,000rpm and maximum torque of 150Nm at 3,800rpm. It gives the new Avensis a top speed of 195 km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 11.3 seconds. Clean, quiet direct injection diesel In the rapidly growing diesel market, new Avensis outguns the opposition with its 81kW two-litre, D-4D common rail, direct injection diesel engine which is among the best performing in this class. The newly developed D-4D diesel technology offers improved performance, reduced emissions, and less noise and vibration. The new engine consumes around 11 per cent less fuel than earlier diesel engines and it complies with Step 3 emission legislation. The Avensis 2.0 D-4D has a top speed of 195 km/h and will accelerate to 100 km/h in 11.4 seconds. Premium quality interior trim Improvements to the new generation Avensis range are not confined to the high technology engines. A series of enhancements to the interior trim have resulted in even better quality, offering premium performance and feel. The heating and ventilation controls have been redesigned and the audio system is now integrated into the centre console with a multi-functional display showing audio and vehicle information. Higher grade models will be equipped with remote audio control switches on the steering wheel. The instrument panel has been redesigned for greater clarity and inserts around detail feature such as air-vents have been improved. Soft touch plastics, leather covers and movement dampers on items such as the glove box cover and ash-tray have been installed to add to the premium quality feel of the cabin. Fresh new styling The new Avensis has a new look too - with a strong Toyota-family face, jewel effect headlamps and a cleaner, more emphatic front bumper design. There is increased use of chrome in the rear design, new rear combination lamps and a chrome exhaust tailpipe to enhance the sporting character of the car. Improved comfort, handling and safety The Toyota Avensis has always benefited from its sophisticated, dual-link rear suspension which offers class leading stability, ride and handling. Driving dynamics of the new range have been improved still further with European-based engineers and Japanese designers working on high speed stability, ride comfort and steering feel. Attention has been paid to improving both active and passive safety. Anti-lock brakes, with electronic brake force distribution, are standard on all models with uprated rear disc brakes on Avensis 2.0 D-4 models. All Avensis 2.0 D-4 models are also available with electronic vehicle stability control (VSC) which helps prevent the car skidding on slippery road surfaces. The VSC system is backed up with traction control and electronic brake assist for more effective braking. All Avensis models for Europe are already equipped with twin front airbags as standard and side airbags as an option. 'Curtain shield' side airbags, which serve to offer even greater protection against head injury by shielding the roof lining, front and centre pillars in the event of a collision are available as an option. High-tech options The new Avensis is available with a number of electronic options, emphasising Toyota's market leading role in the development of the latest high technology solutions. An in-car satellite navigation system can be fitted to give Turn-by-Turn visual instructions through the multi-function display panel. A CD-player can be mounted in the glovebox. Photos: Toyota
