The new Audi A4 Avant has arrived, offering dynamism at the highest level with the sheer agility of its aluminium suspension and the power of its free-revving engines. Its design combines aesthetic precision and functional perfection in a truly modern interpretation of Audi's typical lines. It's a genuine Audi in every way.

Audi A4 Avant: it has literally defined a new segment since 1996 and influenced the design trend of its decade. Its successful concept is best confirmed by the fact that it has been copied so frequently.

After its unprecedented, successful history - with more than 300,000 units sold, the A4 Avant was the most successful premium estate car in its segment in Western Europe - Audi now presents the next generation. The latest A4 Avant will once again overtake its competitors and make an impressively dynamic design statement.

New engines, higher power output

These powerful, high-torque engines ranging from 74 to 162 kW (100 to 220 bhp) mean supreme performance.

Audi is unveiling two entirely new petrol engine designs with an aluminium block for the new A4: a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder unit developing 96 kW (130 bhp) and a 3.0-litre V6 rated at 162 kW (220 bhp). The 75 kW (102 bhp) 1.6-litre is the basic engine. The spark-ignition engine range is completed by the successful 110 kW (150 bhp) 1.8 T and the 2.4 V6 engine, with its power output increased to 125 kW (170 bhp).

At the launch date, the following TDI engines will also be available: two versions of the 1.9-litre four-cylinder unit with pump-injector fuel supply and power outputs of 74 and 96 kW (100 and 130 bhp) and two versions of the V6 2.5 TDI rated at 114 and 132 kW (155 and 180 bhp).

The fuel tank capacity of 70 litres (on front-wheel drive versions; 66 litres for the quattro) permits TDI drivers to cover distances of up to 1,300 km (1.9 TDI) before refuelling.

Exemplary agility

These engines deliver their power to the road either via the front wheels or by means of quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Five or six-speed manual gearboxes are available for the various A4 models, as is Audi's continuously variable multitronic automatic transmission. This revolutionary transmission technology is available for the A4's front drive versions. For the first time ever, multitronic can also be specified with a TDI engine: the high-torque 114 kW (155 bhp) version of the 2.5 V6 TDI.

The aluminium suspension installed on both the new Audi A4 Avant and the saloon, sets new standards: its low unsprung mass is the basis for exemplary, dynamic road behaviour. In addition to perfect steering precision and exact handling, ride quality is superb. All these features that led to many motoring journalists praising the new A4 saloon as the benchmark in its class are now also available on the Avant.

As far as active and passive safety are concerned, the Avant maintains the same high standards as the A4 saloon. The ESP 5.7 Electronic Stability Program with hydraulic brake assist is standard, as are the full-size front airbags and front side airbags and Audi's SIDEGUARD head airbag system. This is an element in the comprehensive occupant restraint system and, together with the high rigidity of the passenger area, guarantees the A4 Avant's excellent crash safety characteristics.

The design: a true Audi

Beautiful estate cars are called Avant - this slogan has been around for some time now. For around 40 percent of those who bought it, design was the reason for purchasing the previous A4 Avant, a considerably higher figure than for its main competitors. For Audi, this success is a commitment.

This is why the slogan applies again to the new A4 Avant. As with the current A4 saloon, the Avant's lines are dominated by purity and clarity. Design characteristics typical of Audi are the high waistline and discreet wedge shape; this harmonious design continues systematically inside the car.

There, the architecture of the horizontal lines around the driver is a convincing feature. This creates a genuine sense of safety allied to the impression of space. The materials used and their workmanship give the A4 the quality level of a luxury car, which in turn has the effect of combining the passenger area and luggage compartment into a single unit.

A high level of versatility

The smooth surfaces in the load area with its through-loading width of 1,000 millimetres, which is exceptional in the premium B segment, are a top-quality feature made possible by the same space-saving rear suspension design as found on current A4 saloons. The suspension was laid out to suit the specific needs of the Avant as a load carrier, right from the initial design phase.

The new A4 Avant underlines its competitive lead with well-planned versatility. The rear backrest can be folded asymmetrically in a ratio of 1/3 to 2/3. The standard combined housing behind the seat backs includes the luggage cover and the dividing net between the passenger and load areas. A special feature of its design is that the housing folds automatically with the wider part of the rear seat. In this position, it can be easily removed through the rear side door.

When the rear seat is folded, a large, continuous surface is created with a length of 1,787 millimetres, a width of 1,000 millimetres and a maximum height of 843 millimetres, which is sufficient for carrying even large objects.

The Audi A4 Avant has an additional 65-litre storage compartment under the double load-area floor. The floor panel can be folded, stood up directly behind the rear seats, fastened in the centre or removed completely in order to use the entire capacity of the lower storage compartment.

This storage compartment offers another innovative feature: a plastic pan, ideal for transporting dirty objects, is installed there and attached firmly to the body. Its smooth, water-resistant surface makes it particularly easy to clean.

The new A4 Avant also sets the standards in terms of its equipment. In addition to a comprehensive standard specification, there are numerous options for making each A4 into an individual dream car.

They include state-of-the-art information systems such as Audi telematics and a variety of new functional, luxury and convenience features.

One example is the A4 Avant's heated windscreen which is available for the first time and with which ice can be removed from the glass in less than one minute at temperatures of around minus 5° Celsius. On hot days, the auxiliary ventilation system with solar roof panel decreases interior temperature efficiently.

As far as exterior design is concerned, eight types of cast aluminium wheel up to a size of 7.5 x 17 (tyres up to 235/45 R17) and no less than 16 body colours are available.
