Skoda : Production in Russia started
Since the start of semi-knocked-down Octavia model range assembly at Solomonovo in the Zakarpattya province last December, production capacity has increased now reaching 300 units monthly. "After the start of Fabia model series assembly next July, the capacity will grow to 500 units a month," said Oleg Boyarin, managing director of a partner company, Eurocar. Eurocar is a project investor having been granted a licence from Škoda Auto to assemble its cars. "Škoda Auto is the first Volkswagen Group brand to manufacture cars in the prospective region of the former U.S.S.R.," said Boyarin. At the same time, Ukrainian customers show great interest in the Superb, the latest model offered by Škoda Auto, introduced at the Kiev International Motor Show in late May. Within the Kiev International Motor Show, it was the Ukrainian government, too, that manifested interest in the Superb; it will include this car in a selection procedure for a representative limousine intended for the government of the Ukrainian Republic. Thanks to a very positive evaluation by the Ukrainian media, assembly of Škoda cars in Ukraine has contributed to dynamic rise in sales of Škodas in the local market. Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma's visit to the assembly works last March as well as his drive at the wheel of an Octavia L&K were also widely presented in the Ukrainian press. Škoda car sales in Ukraine grew by 84 per cent to 2,146 units during the first five months of this year as compared to the same period of the last year. Now there is a process of improving the quality of the retail and service network in Ukraine with close to 40 dealers waiting for their certification next summer. In 2001, sales increased by 80.3% to 4,212 cars in Ukraine as compared to the previous year, and further growth is expected this year.
