Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Announces Organizational Changes

Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. (TMS) announces organizational changes in Supplier Development and Corporate Contributions.

Armstrong Promoted to National Manager 

J.L. Armstrong has been promoted to national manager, supplier development. He is responsible for managing the company's progress of purchases from minority- and women-owned firms. In support of Toyota's 21st Century Diversity Strategy, his responsibilities also include developing and implementing a comprehensive strategic supplier diversity plan that ensures Toyota's suppliers reflect the communities where Toyota does business throughout the United States.

Toyota unveiled its 10-year, $7.8 billion diversity strategy last year. The plan calls for dramatic increases in Toyota's investments in minority purchasing, advertising, dealer development, corporate giving and career training.

Armstrong began his career with Toyota in 1992 as merchandising manager. Prior to Toyota, he was director of business affairs for Universal Television, MCA, Inc. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business from Indiana University in Bloomington. He is an ordained minister with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and serves on the ministerial staff of Rev. Dr. Cecil Murray at First AME Church in Los Angeles.

Armstrong is Vice Chair-External Affairs of the Southern California Regional Purchasing Council board of directors, and serves on the senior corporate executive advisory board of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C.

Underwood Appointed National Manager 

Tracy Underwood, a 14-year TMS associate, has been promoted to national manager, corporate contributions. She is responsible for the administration of nearly $12 million in national corporate contribution programs, including community relations and corporate volunteer activities.

Underwood began her career at Toyota as a human relations analyst. She has held positions in community relations, Lexus public relations, and most recently served as media relations manager. Prior to Toyota, she worked for the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute and in the human resources department at Bateman Eichler, Hill Richards, a stock brokerage firm.

Underwood graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management. She is a member of the board of directors of the Volunteer Center, South-Bay-Harbor-Long Beach; and an advisor to the Toyota/Young Black Scholars program.
