Joint museum project of Audi and the city of Zwickau

Ingolstadt - Audi is participating in a project at the company's "birthplace": together with the city of Zwickau, Audi intends to establish August Horch Museum Zwickau GmbH. Audi and the city authorities will each control a 50 percent share of this nonprofit making enterprise. The basic conditions for the takeover of the planned museum's site are currently being clarified.

"We are celebrating three major anniversaries in 1999 - Horch's centenary, 90 years of Audi and the 50th anniversary of Audi's move to Ingolstadt - so this is the ideal moment to commemorate Audi's 'birthplace'," explained Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG.

The very first Audi was built in the existing museum building. The office of company founder August Horch has been preserved in its original state and has now been fully restored. The purpose of the newly founded company is to trace the history of the automobile industry in Zwickau and at other Auto-Union production sites, particularly in Saxony.
The project will involve the complete refurbishment of the museum building, looking after and restoring the remarkable collection of vehicles, redesigning the exhibitions and running the museum. Audi intends to support the restoration project through donations to the tune of several million marks. "We are delighted that Audi will be participating in this project, which will spotlight Zwickau and Western Saxony," declared Zwickau's Lord Mayor Rainer Eichhorn. The city of Zwickau will operate the museum in conjunction with the office of culture for the Zwickau region.
