Toyota
Reports August Sales Torrance,
CA - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., reported August sales of
158,918 cars and trucks, an increase of 7.2 percent over last August.
Calendar-year-to-date (CTYD) sales total 1,167,582, an increase of 70,604
units, or 6.4 percent compared to the same period last year. "In
full swing this month, the launch of the all-new Camry will be the biggest
in our history," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO.
"We look for Camry sales to pickup in the final quarter as dealer
stock of the all-new ’02 model arrive in volume." The
Toyota Division recorded August sales of 138,151 units, an increase of 8.8
percent. Camry sales were 34,509, down 7.1 percent. The Corolla compact
sedan posted sales of 20,629, an increase of 2.6 percent. The popularity
of the Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan continues to escalate with sales of
1,311, up 66.4 percent over the same period last year. Toyota
light trucks recorded 65,035 sales, an increase of 32.3 percent. Light
truck sales were led by the all-new Highlander mid-size sport utility
vehicle (SUV) with 9,022 units sold. The RAV4 compact SUV recorded 7,922
sales, up 106.7 percent. The Sequoia full-size SUV recorded sales of
5,831. The Tacoma pickup posted sales of 14,898, an increase of 12.0
percent over the same period last year. Lexus
Division sales were led by the flagship LS 430 luxury sedan with 2,743
sales, up 187.2 percent. The GS 300 sport sedan posted 2,237 sales, up 8.3
percent, while the GS 430 recorded 455 sales, an increase of 19.1 percent.
The all-new SC 430 hardtop convertible continued to post strong sales with
1,100 units sold. Sales
of North American-built vehicles made up 55.2 percent of total August
