Paris - PSA Peugeot Citroën
will begin manufacturing the Citroën C3 at its Porto Real plant in Brazil
in early April, thus adding a third model to its local output, along with
the Citroën Xsara Picasso and the Peugeot 206. The project required a
dedicated investment of nearly €50 million and will enable the
production of 15,000 Citroën C3 cars in the first year to serve demand in
the Mercosur countries.
This latest investment,
following the decision announced in February to produce the Peugeot 307 in
Argentina starting in 2004, confirms the Group's long-term strategy in the
Mercosur region. The Porto Real plant produced 48,000 Peugeot 206s and
Citroën Xsara Picassos in 2002. It currently employs 1,300 people and has
a production capacity of 100,000 vehicles a year in three shifts.

An engine manufacturing
facility was inaugurated at the Porto Real plant in March 2002. With a
capacity of 50,000 units a year, the facility produces 1.6L, 16V engines
for vehicles made in Brazil and Argentina.
In 2002, in a Brazilian
market that declined by 7.1%, the Group increased sales by 32% to 64,000
vehicles, thereby improving its market share to 4.5% from 3.2%. The growth
ranks PSA Peugeot Citroën the number-five carmaker in Brazil and number
one among manufacturers recently established in the country. In Latin
America, a priority growth region for PSA Peugeot Citroën, the Group sold
109,000 cars, representing a 1.3% gain despite weaker demand.
