GENEVA - The star of the Land Rover stand at the Geneva Show will be the modified Defender used by Lara Croft in the movie 'Tomb Raider'. The film stars Angelina Jolie and is scheduled for a summer 2001 release in North America.

The Tomb Raider Defender is based on a Defender high capacity pick up and is powered by a 184 PS 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine. The body is finished in Bonatti Grey metallic and features aluminium tread plates. For the rough conditions, the vehicle is equipped with a raised air intake and has an expedition tool kit. A self-recovery winch is provided that can be mounted on various locations around the vehicle. Auxiliary lights are fitted to the roll-over protection cage and the interior is provided with navigation and communication equipment.

To commemorate Land Rover's involvement in the movie, a limited-edition 'Tomb Raider' Defender will go on sale later this year. Land Rover's appearance at the Geneva Show will be the company's first as part of Ford Motor Company's Premier Automotive Group.

The latest versions of Freelander, Europe's best-selling four-wheel-drive vehicle, will also be on show. The latest models for 2001 feature a 2.5-litre, 177 PS V6 petrol engine and a 2.0-litre, common rail, Td4 112 PS turbodiesel engine. The 1.8-litre, four-cylinder 117 PS petrol engine continues in the Freelander line-up. The V6 version is equipped with a five-speed automatic gearbox with 'Steptronic' as standard and this gearbox is also available on the Td4. Changes to the chassis and interior make the Freelander more driveable and comfortable than before. Freelander sold more than 71,500 vehicles in 2000 compared with 68,700 in 1999, an increase of 4%. The new derivatives will spearhead launches into new markets such as the Middle East, Japan and the USA so the success of Freelander looks set to continue.

Other highlights of the Land Rover stand include an Autobiography version of the Range Rover. The Autobiography programme offers a bespoke service on Range Rover vehicles from Land Rover Special Vehicles. The other Range Rover on display is a 'Westminster' limited edition featuring the 4.6-litre, 218 PS V8 engine.

The latest 2001 versions Discovery and Defender - both featuring a variety of improvements - are also on display at Geneva.
