Tom F. Smith Joins Kia Motors America

IRVINE, Calif. - Tom F. Smith has joined Kia Motors America (KMA) as director of marketing communications at the company's U.S. headquarters in Irvine, California. Smith brings more than 15 years of experience in the automotive industry with both Toyota and Volkswagen to his position at Kia and will report directly to Walter Anderson, vice president, marketing, at KMA.

"Tom brings to Kia both a depth and breadth of experience in strategic planning, advertising and brand development that will help us meet the ambitious goals we've set for ourselves in the U.S.," said Walter Anderson, vice president, marketing, Kia Motors America, Inc. "We're looking forward to harnessing Tom's experience and high energy as we continue to build brand awareness for this young company in the American market."

Prior to joining Kia, Smith spent 12 years with Toyota Motor Corporation, beginning with five years in Tokyo working in a variety of international positions including sales planning, market research, regional advertising and more. In 1992, Smith moved to Toyota Motor Europe and was located in Brussels, Belgium, starting as an assistant manager, marketing and eventually serving as Lexus brand development manager, Toyota brand communications manager and finally, deputy general manager, marketing. Most recently, Smith worked for Volkswagen, serving as national marketing director for Rolls-Royce and Bentley brands in North America.

In his position at Kia, Smith will be responsible for all Kia advertising including mass media and dealer marketing groups. In addition, Smith will oversee customer relationship marketing for the company, including the Internet and direct mail as well as merchandising activities such as auto shows, dealer meetings and point of purchase.

Kia posted record year end sales of 237,345 in 2002, representing a 6.1 percent increase over calendar year 2001 results.
