Also on show for the first time at boot 2003 is the new Volkswagen series of compact four-cylinder engines, featuring the models SDI 40-4, SDI 50-4, and SDI 60-4. They now complement the existing range of five-cylinder engines which provide power output from 40kW (55 bhp) to 111kW (150 bhp). The four-cylinder compact series comprises three engines of identical mechanical construction which, depending on engine speed level, have maximum and continuous power ratings of 29 kW (40 bhp), 37 kW (50 bhp), and 44kW (60 bhp). As naturally aspirated diesels, all three engines operate at very low mechanical loads and have special engineering features to achieve outstanding refinement, especially at low engine speeds and when idling. This means that Volkswagen Marine now offers a range of five naturally aspirated and three turbodiesel engines designed for different types of recreational craft. However, all engines have the following features: Very environment-friendly due to low emissions, high level of recyclable parts, and "biodiesel" (PME) approval Upright oil filters in high position and an electric oil extraction pump. These components allow a completely contamination free, environment-friendly oil change No more outdated routine maintenance work thanks to an automatic poly-V belt and hydraulic valve clearance compensation Fast and therefore low-cost servicing supported by specially developed, extensively protected central electronics with diagnostic functions and fault memory All Volkswagen marine engines are capable of continuous full throttle and are extensively protected against corrosion, including a sea water resistant special coating. In time for the 2003 season the dealer and service network has been developed to cover all major water sport regions of Europe. Agreements have now been concluded with experienced specialist firms for the water sport markets of Britain and France as well as Spain and Portugal. They have the capability to fully integrate the Volkswagen Marine engine range in existing sales and service structures. The companies, which are Finning (UK) Ltd (Great Britain), Eneria S.A. (France) and Finanzauto S.A. (Spain & Portugal) are importers of the globally successful Caterpillar products. Their heavy and medium diesel engines are not only used in shipping, but are also very successful as high-end engines for modern super yachts. The Volkswagen marine engines form an extension of this range into a lighter engine class. A highlight of Volkswagen Marine's presence at boot 2003 will again be the technical presentations on a variety of aspects of VW marine engines. These take place every hour. The boat show team includes specialists for sales and service as well as development engineers who will be able to deal with all questions in detail. (Jan 16, 2003)
