Today, the 250,000th vehicle since the start of volume production in March 2005 rolled off the assembly line at the BMW plant Leipzig. The anniversary vehicle is a three-door BMW 118d in Alpine White. It has been ordered by a customer in Austria.

Plant Director Peter Claussen also announced today that a third model will soon be built at the Leipzig plant. In addition to the BMW 3 Series Saloon and the three-door BMW 1 Series, the new BMW 1 Series Coupé will also be manufactured in Leipzig.

Like the 1 Series three-door model, the 1 Series Coupé will be produced for the global market.

Three models roll off the same assembly line All three models (3 Series Saloon, 1 Series three-door, 1 Series Coupé) are manufactured on the same lines - body fabrication, paint shop facility and assembly. Component production in the body shop is the only area where parts for the three models are produced at dedicated sites.

Design capacity achieved - more than 5,200 people employed at the complex The BMW plant Leipzig currently manufactures between 650 and 700 vehicles a day depending on demand. This is achieved through flexible working time and shift systems.

More than 5,200 people are currently working at the site of the BMW plant Leipzig. They are employed by BMW, suppliers and partners, with around 2,500 currently working directly for BMW.

New form of sporty dynamic performance: the BMW 1 Series Coupé

The exceptionally successfully BMW 1 Series is being logically extended by the distinctly sporty two-door automobile. The new BMW 1 Series Coupé produced in Leipzig is being presented to the public for the first time at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. It will be at European dealers' showrooms from 24 November 2007. The sales launch in the USA is planned for spring 2008.

BMW EfficientDynamics: new diesel engine in the 123d

The BMW Group is gradually launching the latest generation of engines with BMW EfficientDynamics in their automobiles. These engines have optimised power and are significantly more fuel efficient. After the BMW 1 Series, EfficientDynamics 2007 will also be available in all vehicles of the BMW 3 Series. A four-cylinder diesel engine packing 204 hp (150 kW) was developed and it is being deployed in the new BMW 123D for the first time (in all versions of the BMW 1 Series). Despite the enormous power, this unit only uses 5.2 litres of diesel per 100 km. CO2 emissions amount to 138 g/km. The 123d also includes measures for optimised energy management such as recycling braking energy and the Auto Start Stop functions.

Leipzig plant: more than two years of successful production

On 1 March 2005, the BMW plant Leipzig started up volume production of the BMW 3 Series Saloon. On 16 June 2006, the 100,000th vehicle was manufactured. On 5 March 2007, integration of a second model commenced with the launch of volume production for the three-door version of the BMW 1 Series.
