The Nissan X-Trail

The X-Terra is that successful because it precisely meets the outdoor enthusiasts' needs for an authentic and versatile, yet affordable 4x4. X-TRAIL was planned and designed to meet the needs of people with a similar, active lifestyle in Europe and Japan, where research confirmed the need for a different product solution", said Patrick Pelata, Executive Vice President , Nissan Motor Co. Limited.

"Nissan's European share in the 4x4 market was 8.5% in 1999. This comes from a long tradition of excellence and innovation in 4x4. Today, in the USA, X-Terra is a hot product reaching 85000 sales in a year. It has been chosen "truck of the year" by 47 leading independent auto journalist in the United States and Canada.

"The new Nissan X-TRAIL concept car is an excellent showcase for Nissan’s advanced 4x4 technology which will raise the standard among compact 4x4s," said Mr. Tetsuo Shimizu Chief Product Specialist and project leader of X-TRAIL development. "The new X-TRAIL concept is Nissan’s answer to the challenge of matching excellent road holding and driving enjoyment with good off-road ability."

The new Nissan X-TRAIL concept brings together advanced technology and design and includes:

  • Class leading 4x4 ability with advanced electronically controlled four-wheel drive system

  • Excellent on-road dynamic ability

  • An advanced ESP system (electronic stability programme) bringing together traction control (TCS), ABS and brake assist with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), limited slip differential (LSD) and ‘drive-by-wire’ throttle control to ensure outstanding 4x4 ability dynamic safety. The system is designed to respond to both emergency conditions when the vehicle is in yaw and also when traction is tested to the limit, for example on a split friction surface.

  • Designed as a purposeful, practical and stylish 4x4 to support outdoor lifestyles

  • Compact external dimensions with large interior providing space for five active people and their luggage

  • New refined QR 2.0-litre petrol engine with DOHC, 16 valves and a compact balancer system.

  • Innovative interior featuring centrally mounted instruments.
