PSA Peugeot Citroën Unit Sales Up 10.6% at June 30, 2001 With 1.6 million Vehicles Sold
Paris - Worldwide sales of PSA Peugeot Citröen cars and commercial vehicles continued to grow during the six months that ended June 30, 2001, increasing 10.6% over the prior-year period to 1,602,000 vehicles, of which 950,000 Peugeots and 652,000 Citroëns. The Group is therefore on target to reach its goal of three million vehicles sold in 2001. Western Europe (17 countries) In the 17 countries of Western Europe, sales increased by 9.3% in a market down 1.7%. Group registrations totaled 1,321,000 units, of which 752,000 Peugeots and 569,000 Citroëns. Market share widened to 14.6%, from 13.4% at June 30, 2000 and 13.7% at December 31, 2000, strengthening the Group's position as Europe's second largest car manufacturer. In France, market share increased to 33.1% at June 30, 2001, from 31.5% one year earlier. Registrations increased to 474,000 units, an 11.6% rise over the prior-year period when the Group reported registrations 425,000 units. In the United Kingdom, where the market expanded by 4.1%, registrations of Group vehicles rose by 21.3% to 192,000 units, versus 158,000 units in first-half 2000. In Italy, registrations increased by 4% to 117,000 units, lifting the Group's share of the local market to 7.7%, compared with 7.5% at June 30, 2000. In Spain, registrations declined by 2.2% to 201,000 units in a market that grew by a flat 0.1%. In Germany, where the market shrank by 2.7%, the Group's market share edged back to 4.5%, from 4.6% at June 30, 2000. Markets outside Western Europe Outside Western Europe, PSA Peugeot Citröen reported a 17.6% increase in sales from the prior-year period, with 271,000 vehicles sold as of June 30, 2001, of which 187,000 Peugeots and 84,000 Citroëns. With 36,000 registrations, PSA Peugeot Citröen maintained its positions in the Mercosur region, where demand varied widely by country. The Brazilian market expanded by 27.1% while in Argentina, demand fell by 37.7%. In Brazil, registrations of Group vehicles increased by 24.3% to 17,000 units, following the inauguration of the Porto Real plant and the late first-half production launch of the Citroën Xsara Picasso, then the Peugeot 206. In Central Europe and Turkey, where the market slumped 31%, registrations of Group vehicles declined by 18.4% to 54,000 units. In China and Iran, PSA Peugeot Citröen consolidated its positions in the first six months of the year. In China, sales of Citroën cars increased by 11.7% to 27,000 units. In Iran, sales of Group vehicles rose by 112.4% to 45,000 units and production of the Peugeot 206 began in June, with more than 40,000 orders booked by the marque's local partner, Iran Khodro.
