Volkswagen art foundation invites press photographers to enter competition
"Willi Luther Award" 2001 / 2002
Wolfsburg - Photographers are invited to enter their work in the Willi Luther competition for press photography and to depict Wolfsburg as an industrial location. Until January 15th 2002 the initiative of the Volkswagen art foundation will thus give press photographers the opportunity to deal with photography as a medium and the industrial situation of Wolfsburg outside their direct work environment.
Unusual prizes will be awarded for this year's "Willi Luther Award": the first prize is a six-day summer school with the well-known photographer Alex Webb (Magnum photographic agency) in the USA. Winners of the second and third prizes can look forward to a trip for two people to the opening of an exhibition of photography in a European city. For the first time, the work of all entrants will be displayed in an exhibition at the "Städtische Galerie" in Wolfsburg in April 2002.
The winners will be selected by a panel of experts comprising
Peter Bitzer (director of the LAIF photographic agency, Cologne), Jupp Darchinger (photographer, Bonn), Heinrich Heidersberger (photographer, Wolfsburg), Anja Jöckel (photography editor of Geo - Saison) and Bodo Krüger (deputy editor in chief of Neue Presse, Hanover).
The work of Willi Luther (1909 - 1996) reflects his interest in Wolfsburg as an industrial town. As head of the Volkswagen department of photography (1953 - 1974), he not only documented the working day at the Volkswagen plant, but also life in Wolfsburg from the economic miracle to the first oil crisis.
