General Motors Debuts The Pontiac Vibe & Hummer H2 SUV At The 2002 LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW
Pontiac Vibe LOS ANGELES - As the automotive industry welcomes 2002, General Motors begins the New Year on a high note with two important product debuts - the youth-oriented Pontiac Vibe and full-sized HUMMER H2 SUV -- at the 2002 Los Angeles Auto Show. Robert Lutz, GM vice chairman in charge of product development and chairman of GM North America, kicks off the first auto show of the new year with an industry outlook at the Motor Press Guild breakfast on January 3, the first of two pre-show media preview days. Here's a quick look at the two products that show goers will have a chance to see before anyone else: PONTIAC VIBE The all-new Pontiac Vibe redefines traditional Pontiac Excitement and resounds with relevance to a new, younger audience. It also ushers in a new, fresh competitiveness for GM in the arena of affordable small cars. Vibe defies traditional vehicle classification. It offers a spacious, versatile interior in the guise of a compact car, and the features of a sports car, sport wagon and SUV all at the same time. It rides tall, has available all-wheel drive, offers innovative storage systems and cargo-hauling capacity, and delivers strong performance, with a 180-hp engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission on GT models. The vehicle comes in Vibe, Vibe AWD and Vibe GT models. Vibe is a bold and purposeful athletic crossover that's the right size for transporting friends and gear, but with a personal (and personalized) feel. Like all Pontiacs, it provides a surefooted, rewarding driving experience. Students at the UCLA film school have created a special three-minute video focusing on the Vibe, which will be shown during the public days of the show. HUMMER H2 SUV
Hummer H2 Photos: GM A bold new chapter in the history of the HUMMER brand begins with the launch of the all-new H2 full-sized sport utility vehicle, which expands the brand's product lineup and broadens its fiercely loyal customer base. Inspired by the HUMMER H2 concept vehicle that appeared at the 2000 North American International Auto Show, H2 takes the rugged characteristics of the original H1 military vehicle and refines them, adding more creature comforts while maintaining off-road leadership. It's a bold and youthful interpretation of what HUMMER means, in a more civilized package of a slightly more manageable size. The extreme design makes sure that H2 has the eye-catching appearance -- brand recognition -- H1. Its on-pavement manners, including ride comfort, are extremely refined. And it provides all the features and amenities that a premium SUV customer might want. Yet, off-road, it is almost as fiercely utilitarian as its famous progenitors - capable of traveling through streams 20 inches deep, climbing 16-inch steps and rocks, paddling through deep sand and outdistancing competitors in high-speed desert pre-runs. The Los Angeles area will have 11 HUMMER dealerships, and the western region of the United States comprises nearly a third of new vehicle registrations in this vehicle market.
