. GM Powertrain Names Innovation Marine As Official OEM To Marineze Vortec HP3 8100 V-8 Marine Engine
KEY WEST, Fla. - GM Powertrain announced Innovation Marine Corp. as an official original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to marinize the Vortec HP3 8100 V-8 high-performance marine engine. The announcement was made at a media briefing in Key West at the American Power Boat Association (APBA) World Championships. Innovation Marine joins a select group of other OEMs that currently marinize GM engines for the marine industry. They will focus on the Vortec HP3 8100 and future performance derivatives of the Vortec 8100 engine. Because of the Vortec HP3 8100¡¦s race boat and recreation boat dual personality, GM Powertrain expects to see considerable demand for this performance marine engine. Based on the largest light truck cylinder block in the GM Powertrain lineup, the engine provides race performance straight from the factory. The Vortec HP3 8100 represents the next step in big-block power, responding to growing market demand for increased performance on land and sea. The Vortec HP3¡¦s performance, rated at 525 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque, and durability is derived from an impressive list of features. Key features include:
The Vortec HP3 8100 engine is available with a remote oil cooling system with all connections and system wiring, a dedicated marine fuel system, as well as a specific performance marine alternator, starter, flame arrestor and 142-degree F thermostat. Even though it is built to deliver thoroughbred performance, the Vortec HP3 8100, with its 9.1:1 compression ratio, is designed to run on regular (87 octane) unleaded fuel available at marina gas docks. GM Powertrain engineers point out the synergistic benefits of developing both automotive and marine engines. The new Vortec HP3 8100 was built on the strengths of the Vortec 8100 truck engine. Design improvements realized from the development of the Vortec HP3 8100 marine engine will be used to further improve the quality and performance of the truck engine. The Vortec Power Team, composed of nine teams powered by the Vortec HP3 8100 V8 marine engine, enjoyed a successful 2002 season racing in the Super Vee Light Single class and the Super Vee Light Twin class. The Vortec Power Team garnered two world records at the Savannah Offshore Grand Prix at Tybee Island in Savannah, Ga. on July 5, 2002. The UTZ Quality Foods/Castaway powerboat in the Super Vee Light Twin class posted a speed of 106.167 and the Vortec Team Extreme (Kava Kava/Air Jamaica) powerboat in the Super Vee Light Single class reached a speed of 89.672 mph. The APBA World Championships Nov. 18-24 in Key West, Fla., is the final race in the 2002 APBA Offshore Race Series, which consists of eight offshore races at various venues with competitors in 10 race classes. All race weekends include a two-day format and are televised on cable network FOX Speed Channel. For additional information, log-on to www.gmvortec.com or www.apbaoffshore.com. (November 23, 2002)
