Homi Patel, vice president and general manager of manufacturing for GMPT, stated that Sutton will continue to report to J. Michael Williams, manufacturing manager of GMPT's Component Operations. The change is effective Sept. 1, 2002. Patel explained that when plants, such as SMCO and SMI are in proximity to each other, one management team is able to efficiently coordinate operations for more than one plant, while reducing structural cost to improve competitiveness. Sutton's new title is plant manager - Saginaw Casting Operations. He is currently SMCO plant manager. Also, effective Sept. 1, 2002, Darrel Phillips, manager of the SMI plant, will begin working on a special assignment, reporting to Williams. His new title is executive manager - special studies. He advanced through several positions there, including foreman, general foreman and superintendent. In 1987, he transferred to the former Saginaw Grey Iron plant, now SMCO, as general superintendent. He returned to the Defiance plant in 1993 when he was promoted to production manager. Phillips joined GM do Brasil in 1999 when he was named manager of aluminum and iron foundries. He returned to the United States in 2000 when he was named plant manager of SMI. Phillips is a native of Kenton, Ohio. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. He is a member of the American Foundry Society and the Brazilian Foundry Society. Sutton began his GM career in Saginaw in 1978 with Central Foundry as a college cooperative student with Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, Mich.). Sutton returned to Saginaw in 1999 when he was appointed manager of SMCO. Sutton is a native of Buffalo, N.Y. He holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from Western Michigan University.
