J Mays: Design Chairman 2001 Eyes on Design

DEARBORN, Mich. - J Mays, Ford Motor Company vice president of Design is the Design Chairman for the 2001 Eyes on Design automotive exhibition to benefit The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology (DIO.)

The 14th annual Eyes on Design will feature luxury designs from the past, present and future and will take place June 17 at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford Estate in Grosse Pointe, Mich.

"I am delighted to be the Design Chairman for this year's Eyes on Design," said Mays. "We at Ford Motor Company are committed to supporting the important vision research work of the DIO and are proud to participate in this annual celebration of automotive design."

Eyes on Design not only showcases the best automotive designs from the past, present and future, it pays homage to those designers who have made a lasting mark on the industry. This year's honoree for Lifetime Design Achievement is the famed Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.

"Giugiaro's achievements over the years have inspired a generation of designers and his influence can be seen in many automotive designs on the road today," said Mays. "He is certainly a worthy recipient of the Lifetime Design Achievement Award."

As we look to the future, the next generation of designers will face a much different industry and a more design-aware consumer. "It is paramount that we equip young designers with the tools and training to meet the changing needs of the consumer," said Mays. "That is why it is so important to recognize the work being done by Viktor Schrekengost of the Cleveland Institute of Arts, this year's Eyes on Design Honored Design Educator."

The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology is a non-profit 501(c) (3) corporation founded in 1972. Eyes on Design is the primary source of revenues for the DIO's research, education and support group programs that enhance the independence of the visually impaired.
