DaimlerChrysler to Sell Mitsubishi’s Canter Light-duty Truck

• Result of strategic sales alliance between DaimlerChrysler and MMC Fuso

• Sales and service at Mercedes-Benz dealerships in five European countries

• Mitsubishi Canter to be sold as an independent brand by its own sales personnel

Stuttgart - DaimlerChrysler AG will begin selling and servicing the Mitsubishi Canter light-duty truck through its DaimlerChrysler AG sales organisations. The light-duty truck (3,5 – 7,5 t max. GVW) will be offered in the UK, France, Italy, Sweden, and Poland.

Beginning on December 3, 2001, the Canter will be offered in the above-mentioned countries at special Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealerships. The Mitsubishi Canter brand, will, however, remain totally independent. Consequently, the customers will be serviced by their own Mitsubishi sales personnel.

“The marketing of the Mitsubishi Canter is a first concrete example of the strategic alliance between the DaimlerChrysler AG and MMC Fuso,” said Dr. Eckhard Cordes, member of the DaimlerChrysler AG Board of Management & Head Commercial Vehicles Division. “It demonstrates how we can use the respective strengths and capabilities of the two companies to our benefit.”

The Mitsubishi Canter was previously offered through the AB Volvo sales network. This changed in April 2001 with an agreement covering DaimlerChrysler’s acquisition of Volvo’s 3.3 % share of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) plus all rights pertaining to the alliance between Mitsubishi Motors and Volvo. The agreement involves the development and planning of new products, as well as the rights to sell light-duty MMC trucks. DaimlerChrysler already held 34 % of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.
