NEW YORK - The world premiere of the Toyota Highlander and the
North American debut of the Toyota RAV4 will be staged at a press conference at the New
York Auto Show, Wednesday, April 19, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The
Highlander and RAV4 are all-new four-door sport utility vehicles (SUV) based on
passenger-car platforms. The Highlander is mid-sized and will arrive in dealerships in
about a year. The compact second-generation RAV4 will go on sale this fall. RAV4 was the
industry's first car-based SUV when it was introduced in 1996.
When RAV4 and Highlander go on sale, Toyota will be the first automotive division to
market two car-based SUVs. The vehicles are designed for buyers seeking the versatility
and styling of an SUV, combined with the ride, handling and comfort of a passenger car.
Don Esmond, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division, will be the
keynote speaker at the press conference.
