GM Service Parts Operations Announces New Parts Distribution Center In Chicago

Chicago - General Motors Service Parts Operations has selected property in the village of Bolingbrook - approximately 25 miles from its current facility in Broadview -- as the location of a new Parts Distribution Center, according to Ronald T. West, general director of warehousing and distribution for SPO.

This new 404,000 square foot facility with an operating space of 384,000 square feet and office area at 20,000 square feet will handle automotive replacement part shipments to more than 570 GM dealerships in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Plans for the construction of the new PDC will begin late March 2001.

West says that several factors influenced the decision to locate the new facility in the Chicago area. "The cooperative work between the leadership of UAW Local 2114 and Chicago management was an important contributing factor. Local and state incentives were also instrumental in providing a favorable business case. In addition, we have maintained an excellent relationship with the local and state government representatives in Illinois. We look forward to continuing our strong association with people in Chicago and the surrounding communities.

"As we implement our strategy to provide world-class service to our GM dealers by realigning our distribution network, creating a warehouse template layout of lean and common processes and improving productivity, the impact on our employees is an important consideration. When we look at the business case for relocating a facility, we also consider the impact on the community in which we reside," adds West. "I applaud the efforts of the federal, state and local government officials and agencies in working with us to build the business case for SPO to remain in the Chicago area."

SPO opened several new PDCs in 1999. The Charlotte, N.C., PDC handles the parts needs of GM dealers located in North and South Carolina, as well as portions of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. It began shipping in late August. The Jackson, Miss., PDC serves GM dealers in Louisiana and Mississippi, as well as portions of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Missouri and Tennessee. It began shipments in July. The Los Angeles ACDelco PDC handles the parts needs of ACDelco distributors and retailers in the Western United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. It began operations in mid-June 1999.

The Memphis, Tenn., ACDelco PDC handles the parts needs of ACDelco distributors and retailers in the Central and Southeastern United States and became fully operational in January 2000. The Columbus, Ohio, ACDelco PDC handles the parts needs of ACDelco distributors and retailers in the Eastern and Northeastern United States and became fully operational during the first quarter of 2000. Construction began in January 2000 for a new PDC in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the second quarter of 2000, construction began on the new Martinsburg, West Virginia PDC. Construction on the new PDC in the Fort Worth, Texas area began in October 2000. Plans for a new PDC in Falls Township, Pennsylvania were announced in September 2000.
