Heinz C. Prechter Posthumously Receives 2002 Manufacturing Leadership Award from SAE/ESD Foundations

Dearborn, Mich. - GM will donate one of the first 2003 Chevy SSR hardtop convertibles to the Heinz C. Prechter Scholarship for Automotive Excellence at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Foundation. After the donation, the Foundation will auction the vehicle on eBay, with the proceeds to be used to further the causes supported by the Foundation.

General Motors President and CEO Rick Wagoner and ASC Chairman David Treadwell made the announcement at the SAE/ESD (ESD The Engineering Society) Foundations Banquet which posthumously honored Heinz C. Prechter with the 2002 Manufacturing Leadership Award. The event was held this evening at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Dearborn, Michigan.

Wagoner and Treadwell presented Daniel M. Hancock, Chairman of the SAE Foundation Board, with ceremonial keys to the new Chevy SSR. Starting on October 2, the SAE Foundation will auction the SSR on eBay. The 10-day auction will conclude at the SAE Detroit Section Global Leadership Conference at The Greenbrier on October 12, 2002.

"GM was the beneficiary of Heinz's vast energy and creative genius for many years," said Wagoner. "We're delighted we can honor Heinz and ASC with our commitment to donate one of the first saleable Chevy SSRs. Heinz's commitment to education and community are shared by GM, and the establishment of a scholarship in his name allows his incredible legacy to continue."

The Heinz C. Prechter Scholarship for Automotive Excellence will benefit students at the collegiate level. Details surrounding the scholarship will be announced in the near future.

"Heinz was deeply committed to education and to mentoring young professionals," said Hancock. "His entrepreneurial spirit will long be admired. The SSR is representative of the innovation and creativity that Heinz exuded."

The Super Sport Roadster (SSR) has drawn rave reviews on the show circuit since its world debut as a concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2000. The eBay auction will enable automotive enthusiasts and collectors from around the country to bid on this unique vehicle.

Details concerning the SAE Foundation's auction of the SSR on eBay will be announced at a later date.
