  • Most powerful series Golf ever built achives sports car performance
  • High torque 3.2-litre V6 engine used in Phaeton luxury class saloon

Wolfsburg / Madrid - The most powerful series Golf ever built is currently being presented for the first time at the international automobile fair in Madrid (from 24 May to 2 June): The Golf R32 with a 177 kW / 241 bhp engine is an impressive demonstration of the dynamic potential of the German compact class bestseller.

The most important constructional point of the R32, which has a redesigned front, rear end and sill area compared to the other series production models, is a 3.2-litre V6 engine. In particular the front end, with its large air inlets, demonstrates the power of the engine. Technical features of the compact 6-cylinder engine, which is also used in the new luxury class saloon Phaeton, include continuously variable inlet valve timing, cylinder-selective knock control and a variable geometry intake manifold. The engine generates an output of 177 kW/241 bhp at 6250 rpm. Its maximum torque of 320 newton metres is available at just 2800 rpm. The appropriate sound is provided by the twin exhaust system. The two exhaust pipes positioned left and right characterise the striking rear end of the vehicle.

The engine gives the sportiest Golf a top speed of 245 km/h (140 mph) and acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 6.4 seconds.

Power is transmitted to the 4MOTION four-wheel drive system fitted as standard via a finely stepped 6-speed gearbox. The sports running gear, lowered by 30 millimetres compared to the standard production model and 18-inch wheels with 225/40 ZR 18 tyres dominate the visual impression of this strikingly sporty top model from Volkswagen. Ventilated disc brakes, with striking blue brake callipers, on all wheels provide braking values similar to those normally found on a sports car.

Inside the car, the black leather finish and brushed aluminium control elements - pedals, cockpit, gearstick - point towards the pedigree of this top model. The ambience of the interior is further refined by the comfortable sports seats with very good side support as well as by a special leather bound steering wheel. The comprehensive range of standard equipment in the Golf R32, which is only available as a two-door model, includes the automatic air conditioning system "Climatronic", radio "Gamma" with eight loudspeakers, a multi-function display and xenon headlights.

The market launch of the Golf R32 will be in late summer 2002.
