Ford: Volvo Gent plant
The Ghent Volvo plant is thus the first and at present the only company in the world to receive this important Japanese award. Two sides of one coin TPM and EFQM are two sides of one coin according to managing director Hubert Casneuf. "The ultimate aim with the two models is the same: ensure continued existence, growth and work opportunities by being more competitive. This is only possible by orientating oneself on the needs of the four interested groups – the customers, employees, shareholders and society. EFQM provides us with a theoretical model, a helicopter-view of our activities. TPM works from below, from the shop floor. It is a very practical instrument for mobilising the workforce and for realising considerable improvements within a short space of time and for directing the company culture towards natural continuous improvement." European Quality Award Volvo Cars Gent is the European Quality Award Winner in the category Operational Units. The international jury of TQM specialists praised Volvo Cars Gent for its dissemination of Policy and Strategy; the internal communication and the culture of Total Quality. EFQM is the European Foundation for Quality Management. TPM Award for World Class Achievement Volvo Cars Gent is the only company in the world that has received the Japanese TPM Award for World Class Achievement. By this, Volvo Cars Gent has surpassed the best Japanese companies. TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) is a perfectionist production philosophy which originated in the maintenance area but which was expanded to become a very specific work instrument for optimizing all aspects of industrial operational management. One of the main aims is to eliminate all losses, namely activities that add no value for the customer. (6 October 1999)
